Bangor Babes top Waterville Woodworkers in Back-and-Forth Bout

The Bangor Babes overcame an early deficit to steal victory against the Waterville Woodworkers in a thrilling GNCBL clash at the John Winkin Sports Complex at Husson University on June 19. The final score was 6-4.

With this win, the Babes advance to 4-3 overall, and 2-1 versus the Woodworkers. It was apparent that the rivalry energy was mounting as players from each team had a star-spangled standoff, refusing to leave their positions on the foul line for more than ten minutes after the national anthem’s conclusion.

Waterville won the standoff, but the Babes drew first blood in the game as Noah Simpson and Christopher Gaudio each provided RBIs in the bottom of the first inning.

It took until the fifth inning for the Woodworkers to manage their first hit off of starting pitcher Grady Vanidestine. Waterville brought seven to the plate and scored three runs to take the lead in the inning.

Trailing 3-2, Bangor managed to scratch back for a run after a walk to Joseph Wellman-Clouse turned into a run on a Peter Keblinsky sac fly.

Bangor cashed in another walk in the seventh to take the lead as TJ Llerena grounded out to the pitcher, allowing Ayden Hogan to score.

The Babes added two more runs in the eighth, both scoring on bases-loaded walks. Waterville added a tally in the ninth, but failed to overcome the lead and fell 6-4.

Relief pitcher Brody Walsh took home the victory. He pitched 3.1 innings, allowing three hits and no runs (allowing two inherited runners to score). Walsh struck out four and walked three. Colton Trisch was credited with the save for the Babes.

Babes head coach Trevor Delaite was impressed with his team’s performance on the mound.

“I thought Grady Vanidestine did a really great job competing, getting us into the fifth.” Said Delaite. “Colton Trisch coming in there to finish the game, and Walsh got his feet back under him and was able to shut the door there.”

The Babes will venture to Augusta on Sunday, June 22 to play the Surgin’ Sturgeon. First pitch is 4PM.
